(Central News Agency, reporter Chang Chi, Hualien County, June 25) The Forestry and Conservation Agency, COA, Hualien Branch has issued a yellow alert, stating that the Wanli River dammed lake in Hualien may overflow within 48 hours. The Hualien County Government's disaster response center was activated to Level 2 today, with the Department of Health and Department of Social Affairs assisting in precautionary evacuations and overseeing the preparation of shelters by noon.
The Hualien County Government stated that a first disaster response meeting was held at 9 AM, presided over by Acting Secretary-General Rao Zhong, to direct the Wanjung Township and Fenglin Township offices to initiate precautionary evacuations, complete the opening of shelters, and prepare necessary evacuation supplies.
The Hualien County Government explained that the yellow alert calls for precautionary evacuation. For individuals with mobility issues, the Department of Health and Department of Social Affairs will assist the two township offices in the evacuation. The Department of Social Affairs will oversee the township offices in completing the preparation of shelters by noon, including the setup of Fukuhara beds, daily necessities, and mobile bathing facilities.
Regarding the investigation of protected households, the Department of Civil Affairs is overseeing the process. The latest statistics show 49 households with 116 people in Fenglin Township and 23 households with 92 people in Wanjung Township, totaling 72 households with 208 people.
In response to a potential upgrade to a red alert requiring a tsunami warning, the Hualien County Fire Bureau and Police Bureau have completed preparations for relevant public announcement vehicles, equipment, and personnel to provide immediate broadcast notifications. All fire department rescue boats are on standby, and a forward command post for disaster relief has been established at Wanjung Junior High School. The Reserve Command has pre-positioned forces at the Fenglin and Wanjung command posts.
The Hualien County Government's Department of Public Works explained that due to siltation at the Jianying Bridge within the alert area, contractors under open contracts have been engaged for dredging operations. Fenglin Township and Wanjung Township each have 560 waterproof panels, which will be allocated by the township offices based on the assessment of protected households.
