CHIYI, Taiwan (CNA) - An 80-year-old man in Chiayi experienced sudden, severe abdominal pain and was rushed to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. His condition rapidly deteriorated, and he briefly lost consciousness. He was saved by a minimally invasive endovascular stent graft repair and returned to the hospital today to share his harrowing experience.

Chiayi Christian Hospital (CCH) issued a press release stating that the patient recently suffered from sudden, severe abdominal pain accompanied by lower back soreness and cold sweats. His condition worsened rapidly, and he was on the verge of shock upon arrival at the emergency department. Emergency examinations revealed the cause to be a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

CCH explained that due to the patient's advanced age of 80 and his extremely unstable vital signs, the vascular surgery team opted for a minimally invasive endovascular stent graft repair. This procedure requires only a small incision of less than 1 centimeter in the groin to insert a stent graft into the ruptured blood vessel, quickly stopping the bleeding, significantly reducing surgical risks, and shortening recovery time.

CCH noted that the patient experienced severe complications such as abdominal compartment syndrome post-surgery. However, with continuous care from the medical team, his condition gradually stabilized, and he was successfully brought back from the brink of death. He is now recovering well and gradually returning to normal life.

Dr. Kuo Chun-ting, a cardiovascular surgeon at CCH, stated that the abdominal aorta is the body's largest artery. When the vessel wall gradually expands due to long-term pressure, forming an aneurysm, it is like a "ticking time bomb" hidden within the body. It often has no obvious symptoms, but once it ruptures, massive internal bleeding occurs in a short period, leading to a mortality rate as high as 80-90%.

Dr. Kuo reminded the public that abdominal aortic aneurysms are more common in elderly men, smokers, and patients with high blood pressure. If one suddenly experiences severe abdominal pain, persistent lower back pain, or even a pulsating sensation in the abdomen, immediate medical attention is crucial.
