Severe Thunderstorms Hit Southern Taiwan; Heavy Rain Expected in Taipei and New Taipei

Central News Agency (CNA) reported on June 25th that the Central Weather Administration (CWA) continues to issue heavy rain warnings. Influenced by the northward movement of Typhoon Meari, an approaching front, and intensified southwesterly winds, short-duration intense rainfall is expected across the region.

Pingtung County is facing localized heavy or extreme rainfall today, while Tainan and Kaohsiung are experiencing localized heavy rain. There is also a probability of heavy rain in Taipei, New Taipei, Chiayi, Penghu, and the mountainous areas of Taitung.

The CWA advises the public to remain vigilant against lightning, strong gusts, and flash floods in rivers and streams. Residents in low-lying areas should prepare for potential flooding, while those in mountainous regions should guard against landslides and falling rocks.

Furthermore, the CWA issued an immediate heavy thunderstorm warning for Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung, effective until 9:04 AM. The weather system is accompanied by strong wind gusts and lightning, posing risks of flash flooding and visibility issues.

Due to the extreme weather, signs of landslides in Shiwen Village, Chunri Township, Pingtung County, have affected transportation. To ensure public safety, local authorities have suspended work and classes for the village today.
