(CNA Taipei, June 29) The weather agency stated today that the upcoming week will see high temperatures with localized afternoon thunderstorms. Highs of 36 degrees Celsius are possible in the greater Taipei area, central and southern Taiwan, and Hualien-Taitung. Two tropical disturbances are brewing over the ocean, with the system near Guam potentially strengthening into the ninth typhoon of the year, Bavi.

Huang En-hung, a forecaster at the Central Weather Administration of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, told CNA that the next week will have less moisture, transitioning to a summer weather pattern dominated by afternoon thunderstorms. Tomorrow and July 1st, localized brief thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon in central and northern Taiwan and mountainous areas elsewhere. Tomorrow, mountainous areas in central and northern Taiwan should watch for locally heavier rainfall.

Huang En-hung stated that from July 2nd to 5th, moisture will be even less, and the weather will be stable, mostly cloudy to sunny across the island, with localized brief afternoon thunderstorms in mountainous areas. From July 6th to 7th, moisture will increase slightly, expanding the range of afternoon thunderstorms to central and northern Taiwan and mountainous areas.

Regarding temperatures, Huang En-hung pointed out that highs across the island will generally be around 32 to 35 degrees Celsius in the coming week, with the greater Taipei basin, areas near mountains in central and southern Taiwan, and the Hualien-Taitung valley potentially experiencing localized highs above 36 degrees Celsius.

Huang En-hung said that one tropical disturbance in the waters southeast of the Philippines and another in the waters southeast of Guam require continuous attention in the coming week. The disturbance southeast of the Philippines is expected to cross the Philippines and enter the South China Sea on July 1st and 2nd. Its current development is not significant and poses no direct threat to Taiwan. However, it will move northward towards Guangdong on July 6th and 7th, slightly increasing moisture near Taiwan.

Regarding the other disturbance southeast of Guam, Huang En-hung mentioned that it has the potential to strengthen into a tropical depression around this weekend and could subsequently become the ninth typhoon of the year, Bavi. The current forecast track shows it moving westward, then turning northward towards the waters south of Japan. However, it is far from Taiwan and poses no direct threat. The weather agency will continue to monitor it. (Editor: Kuan Chung-wei) 1150629
