(CNA, Reporter Huang Chao-wen, Taipei, June 30) The Vehicle Safety Inspection and Certification Center today announced the Taiwan New Car Safety Rating report. MERCEDES-BENZ GLC-CLASS received 5 stars, while KIA SPORTAGE scored low in child protection, receiving an overall rating of only 2 stars.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications, in order to provide consumers with new car safety information, promote the upgrading of the vehicle industry, and enhance domestic vehicle safety, has promoted the Taiwan New Car Safety Rating system (TNCAP), executed by the Institute of Vehicle Safety Inspection and Certification.

The Vehicle Safety Inspection and Certification Center announced the new car safety ratings for 2 models in the second quarter. Among them, MERCEDES-BENZ GLC-CLASS received scores of 95% for adult occupant protection, 93% for child occupant protection, 71% for vulnerable road user protection, and 76% for safety assist systems across the four major safety domains. According to the star rating balance standard, the GLC-CLASS model received an overall rating of 5 stars.

For the other model, KIA SPORTAGE, the Vehicle Safety Inspection and Certification Center's manager, Hong Guo-yi, stated that due to the unavailability of the base model at the time of purchase, only the higher-tier Apex model could be used for testing. The scores for the four major safety domains were 73% for adult occupant protection, 51% for child occupant protection, 69% for vulnerable road user protection, and 52% for safety assist systems. According to the star rating balance standard, the SPORTAGE model received an overall rating of 2 stars.

Hong Guo-yi pointed out that both models are imported vehicles, and corresponding rating results have been released abroad. However, for the same KIA SPORTAGE, due to differences in equipment between domestic and international versions, the overseas rating was 5 stars, while the domestic test result was 2 stars.

Hong Guo-yi expressed hope that this will encourage manufacturers to continuously strengthen and improve their equipment or system performance tuning, making vehicles more suitable for Taiwan's road environment and further enhancing overall vehicle safety.

The Vehicle Safety Inspection and Certification Center indicated that it is expected to announce the vehicle safety rating results for MG ZS by the end of September this year, providing the public with an objective safety reference for car purchases. It is hoped that domestic vehicle manufacturers will continue to improve vehicle safety performance and proactively apply for TNCAP paid evaluations to provide more vehicle safety information to the public.
