(CNA Kathmandu, June 30, comprehensive foreign news) Nepalese Ministry of Agriculture officials said today that Nepal is working to combat a surge in bird flu cases, having culled over 596,000 domestic fowl and closed the country's only zoo.

According to AFP, Nepal, a country located in the Himalayan region, has experienced bird flu outbreaks in previous years and reported its first cases on March 18 this year.

Since then, Nepalese government livestock officials have overseen large-scale culling of chickens and other domestic fowl, and destroyed over 1 million eggs.

Umesh Dahal, Director of Nepal's Department of Livestock Services, stated that cases have now been reported in 11 districts, including three districts in the Kathmandu Valley, which is the most severely affected area.

Dahal said authorities suspect the outbreak may have been spread by crows. (Intern Editor: Wang Bojie / Editor: Chen Zhengjian) 1150630
