(Washington, July 30, CNA, Reuters) The US Supreme Court today rejected President Donald Trump's executive order to restrict birthright citizenship, dealing a blow to one of his signature anti-immigration policies.
According to AFP, the Supreme Court issued this highly anticipated ruling on the last day of its term, deciding by a 6-3 vote to maintain the right of automatic US citizenship for almost all individuals born on US soil.
Trump signed an executive order last year after returning to the White House, directing states to stop issuing identification to children born to undocumented immigrants and visa holders. Foreign media previously reported that this order was ruled by lower courts to violate the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution; the Supreme Court agreed late last year to rule on the legality of Trump's directive to restrict US birthright citizenship.
Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion, which was supported by two other conservative justices and three liberal justices.
Roberts wrote, "Children born in the United States to parents who are unlawfully present or temporarily present are within the "jurisdiction" of the United States and are citizens of the United States from birth by the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment."
This rejection by the Supreme Court of Trump's executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship is the third setback he has faced during his term.
After the Supreme Court justices ruled in February that Trump did not have the authority to implement global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), they ruled 5-4 yesterday that Trump could not dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook based on unproven mortgage fraud allegations.
