(CNA, Reporter Chang Chun-hsiang, Hsinchu, June 30) The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) visited Dapo Elementary School in Taitung to conduct science education courses, guiding students to understand fault geological landscapes and their causes, and designing courses on bicycle structure and mechanical principles, allowing students to use both their minds and hands.

ITRI stated in a press release today that Director of the President's Office and Chairman of the Social Welfare Committee, David Ho, said that ITRI not only promotes industrial upgrading but also shoulders the mission of corporate social responsibility and technological grassroots development.

David Ho said that by bringing Taiwan's rich local geothermal science, along with bicycle design that combines aesthetics and engineering logic, to Dapo Elementary School in Taitung, they hope to plant a seed of science in the hearts of the children, allowing technology to be not only an engine for industrial development but also a powerful force for eliminating social disparities and driving cultural equality and inclusive development.

ITRI pointed out that the science education courses designed this time balance breadth and depth, guiding about 30 elementary school students from grades 2 to 5 to learn scientific knowledge and skills through hands-on activities.

ITRI stated that Taitung's Chishang is located in the East Rift Valley and boasts the globally renowned "Chishang Fault" in the geological community. Due to frequent crustal activity in the fault zone in the East Rift Valley, potential geothermal resources are also closely monitored by geologists and green energy development teams.

Dapo Elementary School is located on the fault line. ITRI explained that to help students become more familiar with their living environment, they specially designed the "Radiant Heat Experiment" course, using a siphon coffee maker to heat water on-site, concretely demonstrating the principles of geothermal systems and geothermal energy conversion for power generation.

In addition, the "Geothermal Geology Model DIY" allowed children to use clay to DIY geological structures layer by layer, and then by cutting a cross-section, observe and understand the mysteries of their hometown's land.

ITRI stated that this year, in collaboration with the Bicycle and Health Technology Industry Research and Development Center under the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Pacific Cycles, they pioneered sports technology and mechanical principles science education courses.

Pacific Cycles shared the history of bicycle development and the innovative structural design of folding bikes, guiding students to understand the evolutionary context of bicycles; the Bicycle Center explained the mechanical principles and component functions of bicycles in an easy-to-understand manner and led students in learning simple maintenance techniques. The "Ace Rider Road Test" allowed students to practically challenge an obstacle course, transforming indoor knowledge into embodied skills. (Editor: Chang Chun-mao) 1150630
