Goto Mitsutaka jokes draft picks are "ranked by looks," impressed by 2 lefties

(CNA reporter Hsieh Ching-wen, New Taipei, June 30) Fubon Guardians selected 9 players in this year's draft. Head coach Goto Mitsutaka specifically mentioned left-handed pitchers Yu Kuan-yu and Chen Ting-hao, selected in the second and third rounds, as being particularly impressive. He also jokingly said the draft was "ranked by looks," noting that top pick shortstop Chen Po-kai is handsome and has an ideal physique.

The Guardians selected Chen Po-kai, a graduating shortstop from Daxi High School, with the first pick in yesterday's CPBL draft. They then selected two left-handed pitchers, Yu Kuan-yu and Chen Ting-hao, followed by outfielder Pasula Takislinian in the fourth round. Rounds five through nine saw the selections of right-handed pitcher Chin Tsung-en, shortstop Chuan Yung-lo, left-handed pitcher Li Sheng-han, right-handed pitcher Liu Chien-li, and first baseman Jilu Shoma, in that order.

Speaking to reporters before today's game, Goto Mitsutaka, when asked about the draft, said that they were able to select most of the players they had their eyes on. He was particularly impressed by the left-handed pitchers selected in the second and third rounds. Yu Kuan-yu participated in a tryout with the team and his fastball velocity was good, leaving a deep impression on the coaching staff. As for Chen Ting-hao, Goto had noticed him when he was still on his university team last year and had reminded scouts to pay more attention to him.

Goto Mitsutaka stated that the Guardians' strategy for this year's draft was to reinforce their pitching staff and acquire players who can play second base and shortstop. Regarding whether there were any immediate impact players for the second half of the season, he said that it will take some time for the players to sign their contracts with the team, and a judgment can be made after they join the team.

Participating in the CPBL draft for the first time as a first-team head coach, Goto Mitsutaka said that he knew each decision he made could change a player's life, so he participated in the draft with a sense of responsibility and solemnity.

Regarding the "looks" of the newly drafted rookies, Goto Mitsutaka joked that the draft was ranked by looks, and that top pick Chen Po-kai is handsome and has an ideal physique.
