(Taipei, June 30, 2025, Central News Agency) A report released in Japan today shows that the average income of Diet members last year was 30.03 million yen (approximately NT$6.01 million), an increase of 4.9 million yen from 2024. Among them, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ranked first among the nine party leaders with 36.41 million yen (approximately NT$7.28 million).
According to reports from Japan's Fuji News Network (FNN) and Jiji Press, the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors in Japan today released the income reports for Diet members for the year 2025. The subjects of disclosure include 293 members of the House of Representatives and 178 members of the House of Councillors who were in office for the entire year of 2025, totaling 471 people.
Both houses of the Japanese Diet disclose this information annually in accordance with the Diet Members' Asset Disclosure Act.
According to this report, the person with the highest income last year was Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) member of the House of Representatives Kenji Nakanishi, who ranked first with 1.14015 billion yen (approximately NT$22.82 million). About 90% of his total income last year came from selling stocks and dividends.
Kenji Nakanishi and LDP member of the House of Representatives and former Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Hisashi Takaichi were the only two people in this report whose total income exceeded 1 billion yen. Including Kenji Nakanishi and Hisashi Takaichi, six LDP members and Democratic Party for the People member of the House of Representatives Yoshihiro Suzuki had total incomes exceeding 100 million yen. Yoshihiro Suzuki's total income last year was 110.02 million yen.
In terms of average income by party, from highest to lowest, they were the LDP at 35.12 million yen, the Democratic Party for the People at 24.38 million yen, the Japan Innovation Party at 23.52 million yen, and the Social Democratic Party at 22.66 million yen.
The average income of the Takaichi Cabinet last year was 28.69 million yen. The incomes of cabinet members, from highest to lowest, were Minister for Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi at 82.58 million yen, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at 36.41 million yen, and Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Yoshimasa Hayashi at 34.50 million yen. Minister of State for National Public Safety Commission Jiro Akama, with 21.49 million yen, was at the bottom of the cabinet in terms of income.
When divided by party leaders, Takaichi ranked first among the leaders of the nine ruling and opposition parties. Her salary income includes her salary as a Diet member and Prime Minister, totaling 23.59 million yen. Combined with other income such as royalties and fees for articles, her income for the year 2025 was 36.41 million yen.
Among the party leader rankings, the second highest income was from Yuichiro Tamaki, representative of the Democratic Party for the People, whose income last year, including salary, lecture fees, and appearance fees on programs, was 28.82 million yen.
