(CNA, Taipei, June 30) -- This year's plum rain season saw the highest average rainfall across Taiwan since 2012, with June precipitation significantly exceeding May. The Taipei Weather Station recorded the highest rainfall for June in its history.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) held a press conference today on the "Typhoon Season Outlook." Huang Chun-hsi, director of the CWA's Forecasting Center, stated that looking back at this year's plum rain season (May to June), rainfall was concentrated in June. May saw significantly below-average rainfall, only half of the usual amount for the period. In June, affected by stationary fronts, the southwest monsoon, and the outer circulation of subsequent typhoons, the western half of Taiwan experienced significant rainfall.
Huang Chun-hsi further explained that there were over 10 consecutive days of prolonged rainfall in mid-to-early June, with accumulated rainfall in the south reaching approximately 400 to 800 millimeters. In late June, hourly rainfall in the western half of Taiwan reached 80 to 130 millimeters. Due to prolonged heavy rainfall in the south, Pingtung recorded nearly 1000 millimeters of rainfall in three days.
Huang Chun-hsi pointed out that the overall average rainfall for the plum rain season across Taiwan was 609.9 millimeters (climate average: 440.7 millimeters), the highest since 2012. The Taipei Weather Station set a record for the wettest June since records began in 1897, with 870.5 millimeters, followed by 757.7 millimeters in 1991 and 711.6 millimeters in 1947.
Regarding temperature, Huang Chun-hsi mentioned that during this year's plum rain season, due to the westward extension of a high-pressure system in late May and the effects of descending southwest winds, high temperatures were observed in the Greater Taipei Basin, near-mountain areas in central and southern Taiwan, and the Hualien-Taitung Rift Valley. Taipei and Keelung set their highest May temperature records on May 27.
Huang Chun-hsi said that May's average temperature was 0.6 degrees Celsius higher than the climate average (25.9 degrees Celsius), while June was 0.5 degrees Celsius lower than the climate average (28.0 degrees Celsius). The overall average temperature was approximately 27 degrees Celsius (climate average: 26.9 degrees Celsius), which is within the normal range. (Editor: Li Hsi-chang) 1150630
