(CNA, Reporter Chiu Te-chen, Sydney, July 1) The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Fiji announced in a press release today that the government of Taiwan has donated US$2 million (approximately NT$44 million) in development cooperation funds to the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) to support various priority initiatives under the '2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent'.

Huang Chih-sheng, acting head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office and counselor, visited the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat in Suva, the capital of Fiji, yesterday (30th) to attend the donation ceremony and represent the government of Taiwan in presenting the development cooperation funds. Esala Nayasi, Deputy Secretary General of the PIF Secretariat, attended to receive the donation.

The press release stated that the annual donation will be used by the PIF Secretariat to advance the '2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent,' strengthen the secretariat's institutional capacity, support small island developing states, and promote regional cooperation projects through the Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP).

Furthermore, Taiwan will continue to support the Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner (OPOC) and the Pacific Resilience Facility (PRF) to help enhance regional cooperation and resilience in the Pacific.

In his speech at the donation ceremony, Huang Chih-sheng emphasized that this donation underscores Taiwan's long-standing partnership with the Pacific Islands Forum and its commitment to continuously support the PIF Secretariat's regional work.

Huang Chih-sheng pointed out that Taiwan is not only an important development partner but also a member of the Pacific island community, sharing the ocean and facing common challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and disaster resilience with regional countries. Taiwan will continue to deepen practical cooperation with Forum member states, sharing experiences in areas including trade, fisheries, agriculture, education, healthcare, public health, disaster resilience, and personnel exchanges. Together, they will work to promote sustainable development and the well-being of the people in the Pacific region and support the Secretariat in implementing the priority tasks of the '2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.'

Nayasi welcomed Taiwan's continued support for priority development work in the Pacific region and expressed gratitude for Taiwan's close partnership with the Pacific Islands Forum over the years.

Nayasi stated that Taiwan's donation demonstrates both parties' commitment to deepening regional cooperation and working together to realize the vision of the '2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.'

The press release noted that Taiwan has long maintained close cooperation with the PIF Secretariat, continuously supporting important initiatives such as sustainable development, ocean governance, climate resilience, institutional capacity building, and regional cooperation. Additionally, Taiwan continues to collaborate with Pacific partners to jointly address common regional challenges, implement the '2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent,' and promote a free, resilient, and sustainable Blue Pacific.
