(CNA Taipei, July 1st) Former DPP Secretary-General and former Taiwan Sugar Corporation (TSC) Chairman Wu Nai-jen was released recently. Kuomintang (KMT) caucus whip Fu Kun-chi stated today that the withdrawal of the TSC's petition for compulsory detention raises questions about whether external forces have interfered with the judiciary. The KMT caucus will demand that the Executive Yuan, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and TSC immediately explain to the public the decision-making process behind withdrawing the petition, and to disclose all relevant meeting minutes and legal bases for public scrutiny.
Wu Nai-jen was detained due to a TSC land case. The creditor, Taiwan Sugar Corporation, filed a request to withdraw the detention petition, and Wu Nai-jen has since been released. TSC explained that Wu Nai-jen's legal representative promised to submit a negotiation or repayment plan by July 20th, which would achieve the purpose of detention by prompting the debtor to come forward for debt negotiation and repayment. Therefore, the detention petition was withdrawn after court consultation, not proactively requested for withdrawal.
KMT Legislative Caucus Whip Fu Kun-chi stated in a press release this evening that this is not just a debt recovery case, but a significant test of whether the Lai administration upholds fairness and justice. If an ordinary citizen owes the government one cent, they will be pursued to the ends of the earth. Wu Nai-jen, who owes TSC NT$170 million due to a land corruption case, was released in just 12 days, effectively serving one day of comfortable detention for every NT$15 million.
Fu Kun-chi added that the fact that TSC proactively withdrew the detention petition is unacceptable to the people of Taiwan. He demanded that TSC clearly explain to the public who exerted pressure behind the scenes.
Fu Kun-chi stated that if owing NT$170 million to TSC can result in a lack of aggressive pursuit, then all citizens who owe payments to TSC, rent to state-owned enterprises, or rent for public land should be treated similarly. Should they all be able to demand creditors withdraw enforcement and not repay their debts? If the answer is no, then why does Wu Nai-jen enjoy such special treatment?
Fu Kun-chi pointed out that it is widely known that President Lai previously vouched for Wu Nai-jen's innocence with his political career. Now, with TSC withdrawing the detention petition, the KMT caucus will demand that the Executive Yuan, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and TSC immediately explain to the public the decision-making process behind withdrawing the petition, and to disclose all relevant meeting minutes and legal bases for public scrutiny.
