(Central News Agency, reporter Wang Chao-yu, Keelung, July 2) A fire broke out in a 3-story residence on Zhongshan 2nd Road in Keelung City yesterday evening. When firefighters arrived, the building was already fully engulfed in flames. A 61-year-old man surnamed Qiu was trapped inside. He was rescued but had no breathing or heartbeat and was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.

The Fire Bureau received a report at 9:38 PM yesterday that a reinforced concrete building on Lane 1, Zhongshan 2nd Road had caught fire and was emitting thick smoke. They immediately dispatched 21 vehicles and 38 personnel from the First Brigade, Xinyi, Ren'ai, Zhongshan, and Qidu branches, along with volunteer firefighters. Upon arrival, the third floor of the building was already fully ablaze.

According to the homeowner, Mr. Qiu was still asleep in his room. Relatives had attempted a rescue, but upon opening the door, they found the interior engulfed in flames and could only report to the fire department for assistance. Firefighters immediately set up water lines and entered to search. They rescued Mr. Qiu from a room at the back of the house, but he had already lost vital signs. Despite emergency treatment at Keelung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, he could not be revived.

The fire was extinguished at 10:07 PM yesterday. After an inspection by firefighters, the main area of combustion was found to be miscellaneous items in the living room, covering an area of approximately 20 square meters. The exact cause of the fire will be clarified after further investigation by the Fire Bureau's Fire Investigation Section. (Editor: Hsu Rui-cheng) 1150702
