(CNA Mexico City, July 1 - Reuters) Local authorities reported that at least two people died from suffocation today during large-scale celebrations in the capital, Mexico City, after Mexico advanced to the Round of 16 by eliminating Ecuador in the 2026 World Cup's top 32 stage.

According to Agence France-Presse, the Mexico City health department stated that a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man died from suffocation.

Mexico had earlier defeated Ecuador 2-0, marking the "El Tri" squad's first victory in a World Cup knockout match since the 1986 World Cup.
