(London, July 1) (CNA) - In the singles matches of the Wimbledon Championships, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka both defeated their opponents today, successfully advancing to the third round of the tournament.
Defending champion Jannik Sinner made Italian tennis history today by defeating Nuno Borges. Sinner won 7-6, 7-6, 6-4, marking his 95th Grand Slam victory, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli to become the Italian player with the most men's singles wins in Grand Slam history.
This match saw Sinner advance to the third round. Compared to his first-round match where he narrowly avoided an upset in a five-set thriller, this straight-sets victory was clearly what he hoped for. Fans will still remember the image of Sinner's right toenail injury in the first round, with blood staining his shoes.
In the women's singles, world No. 1 Sabalenka faced McCartney Kessler of the United States today and once again won a tie-break in a Grand Slam match, successfully advancing to the third round.
Sabalenka took the first set in just 33 minutes today, appearing to be on track for a swift victory. However, the tenacious Kessler broke Sabalenka's formidable serve to take a 4-2 lead and held two set points at 5-3.
World No. 57 Kessler later secured two set points in the tie-break, but Sabalenka ultimately converted her third match point, winning 6-1, 7-6. The entire match lasted 1 hour and 39 minutes. (Compiled by Qu Xiangping) 1150702
