Wang Yi Speaks with Rubio, Hopes U.S. Will Handle Taiwan Issue Cautiously

(CNA Taipei, July 1) Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs, spoke by phone with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on June 30. According to Xinhua News Agency, Wang Yi stated that the Taiwan issue affects the whole situation, and expressed hope that the U.S. side will handle Taiwan-related affairs with extreme caution.

Wang Yi said that in May of this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Trump reached a series of consensuses in Beijing, including building a constructive strategic stable relationship between China and the U.S., providing strategic guidance for China-U.S. relations for the next three years and even longer, and clarifying the direction of development.

He said that building a constructive strategic stable relationship is what the people of both countries desire, what the international community anticipates, and is also in the fundamental interests of China and the U.S. Both sides should eliminate interference, overcome obstacles, and firmly move forward in this correct direction.

Wang Yi stated that both sides should always uphold the spirit of equality, respect, and mutual benefit, and transform the important consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries into concrete policies and practical measures. Building a constructive strategic stable relationship is not just a slogan; it requires action, meeting halfway, and sustained effort.

He emphasized that to this end, both sides should expand the list of cooperation, create more positive agendas, and at the same time shorten the list of issues and manage various risks and hidden dangers. The Chinese report did not show Rubio's remarks, but it claimed that both sides agreed that the phone call between the foreign ministers of the two countries was positive and constructive, and agreed to jointly implement the important consensus reached by the heads of state of the two countries and continue to maintain communication in a flexible manner.
