SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Artificial intelligence company Anthropic said Tuesday that the U.S. Commerce Department has lifted export controls on its Fable and Mythos AI models, less than three weeks after the startup was ordered to halt services for its most advanced AI models due to national security risks.

The U.S. government has been stepping up scrutiny of new AI model releases, seeking to identify potential national security threats, as it worries that advanced AI models driving the AI boom and massive investments could be misused by military and intelligence agencies in China, Russia, or other countries.

Anthropic halted the provision of its Mythos 5 and Fable 5 models on June 12 after receiving an export control order.

On June 26, the U.S. government partially eased previous restrictions, allowing Anthropic to release Mythos 5 to some "trusted" U.S. institutions.

"We will resume services starting tomorrow," Anthropic said in a post on social media platform X.

According to a letter seen by Reuters, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick informed Anthropic that the government had lifted export controls and that no license would be required to export the Mythos and Fable models.

Lutnick stated that Anthropic has agreed to proactively detect and address security risks associated with these models, work closely with the U.S. government to develop release guidelines and standards for Mythos, Fable, and future models, and notify the government upon discovering any malicious activity.

However, the U.S. government's approach to vetting which companies can access these AI models has also drawn criticism.

Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, said on X that while extensive safety testing "is not a bad thing," he disagrees with "governments deciding which customers can use it."

OpenAI also delayed the full public release of GPT-5.6 at the request of the U.S. government, making it available only to a few vetted partners. (Compiled by Xu Rui-cheng) 1150701
