Key News on Israel-Palestine Conflict

(CNA Jerusalem, July 2nd, Combined Reports) Israel today marks 1000 days since the surprise attack by Palestinian armed group Hamas (Hamas) on October 7, 2023. Commemorative events are being held across the country, with some citizens protesting the government's handling of the situation and demanding the establishment of a national investigative committee.

According to AFP, the first commemorative event began at 6:29 AM, precisely the time Hamas launched its attack, igniting the Gaza war.

AFP statistics based on official Israeli data indicate that Hamas's attack resulted in 1221 deaths and 251 people taken hostage to Gaza.

Israel launched retaliatory military operations in Gaza. According to data from the Hamas-affiliated Ministry of Health, over 73,000 people have died there to date. The United Nations considers this statistic to be credible.

Dina Hertz, a resident of Jerusalem, told AFP, "What weighs most heavily on me is that even now, 1000 days after the event, we are still mired in it, and things that could have led to some kind of conclusion have never happened."

"I mean a real investigative committee, real accountability, that can draw substantive conclusions, and that those in high positions at the time can feel genuine shame and pain for their dereliction of duty."

The "October Council," composed of families of victims and hostages from the October 7th event, is one of the organizers of today's series of activities.

Commemorative crowds are expected to gather in front of the Israeli Knesset building and the residences of several government members.

The October Council posted on X, "Hostage and victim families demand the immediate establishment of a national investigative committee!"

Tel Aviv's "Hostages Square," which has become a symbolic focal point during the Gaza war for demanding the release of captured hostages, is expected to be renamed "Memory Square."

At 8:00 PM local time tonight, a memorial event will also be held at Tel Aviv's Yarkon Park, where families of victims and protest leaders opposing the Israeli authorities' handling of the situation will gather. (Intern intern translator: Wang Bojie / Editor: Xu Chongzhe) 1150702
