(CNA Taipei, July 2nd) Major League Baseball (MLB) today announced the roster for the All-Star Futures Game. Philadelphia Phillies "fireballer" Pan Wen-hui is the sole Taiwanese representative this year. Having been reborn after elbow surgery, he is the 15th Taiwanese player to be selected in history.
Pan Wen-hui underwent Tommy John surgery last year, missing the entire season. He started this year in Class A with the Phillies' affiliate, and was promoted to High-A in mid-May. In 9 appearances and 11 innings, he allowed only 1 run and struck out 13 batters. In mid-June, he was promoted again to Double-A, where in 5 appearances and 5 innings, he has a 5.40 ERA.
Past Taiwanese players selected for the All-Star Futures Game include Chen Chin-feng, Tsao Chin-hui, Wang Chien-ming, Hu Chin-lung, Chen Yung-chi, Lin Che-hsuan, Luo Chia-jen, Chen Chun-hsiu, Chiang Chih-hsien, Pan Chih-fang, Lee Chen-chang, Huang Wei-che, Hu Chih-wei, and Lee Hao-yu. Of these, 10 have since been promoted to Major League Baseball.
The All-Star Futures Game is scheduled to be held on July 12th, US time, at Citizens Bank Park, the home stadium of the Philadelphia Phillies. The stadium is also preparing to host its first MLB All-Star Game; Philadelphia last hosted the All-Star Game in 1996 at its former home, Veterans Stadium. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150702
