(CNA) - A 47-year-old man, identified by his surname Lin, was driving his car in the wrong direction in Zhunan Township, Miaoli County, when he collided head-on with an oncoming motorcycle, causing the rider's death. Lin fled the scene but was apprehended by police five hours later in a closet at a friend's home. A needle and an etomidate vape cartridge were found in the car, and police suspect drug use may have contributed to the accident.
The Miaoli County Fire Department received a report of a traffic accident on Longshan Road Section 3 in Zhunan Township around 5 PM on July 1st. Personnel and vehicles from the Zhunan Brigade were dispatched to the scene, where they found a collision between a car and a motorcycle. Onlookers reported that the car driver had fled the scene. The motorcyclist, identified as Tang, was unconscious, had an open fracture of his left lower leg, and was pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.
Nearby residents reported hearing a loud crash at the time of the accident. Upon investigation, they found the front of a white car dented and the motorcycle shattered. The motorcyclist was bleeding profusely and unresponsive. Some people immediately called the police and emergency services. The driver of the car reportedly fled the scene amidst the chaos, and was no longer present when the police arrived.
The Zhunan Precinct of the Miaoli County Police Bureau stated today that an investigation revealed that the motorcyclist, Tang (55), was riding his motorcycle eastbound on Longshan Road Section 3 in Zhunan Township when he was struck by a car driven by Lin (47), who was traveling in the opposite direction. The collision also affected three motorcycles parked on the roadside. The accident resulted in severe injuries to Tang, who was later declared dead at the hospital.
Police stated that after the accident, Lin failed to stop at the scene to provide aid or report the incident, instead abandoning his vehicle and fleeing. The precinct immediately formed a task force, reviewed surveillance footage from the surrounding area, and expanded the investigation. Within five hours of the incident, Lin was apprehended inside a closet at his friend's residence in Zaoqiao Township. A needle and an etomidate electronic cigarette (gross weight 5.5 grams) were found in the car. Further investigation will be conducted to determine if drug use or other criminal activities were involved.
Following police questioning, Lin was transferred to the Miaoli District Prosecutor's Office on suspicion of hit-and-run, negligent homicide, drug possession, and drug use. The investigation into the cause of the accident and related responsibilities is ongoing. (Editor: Li Hengshan) 1150702
