Seed Improvement and Propagation Station Establishes First Organic Seed Field, Trials Buckwheat for Scenic Flower Displays

(CNA, Taipei, July 2nd) The Ministry of Agriculture's Seed Improvement and Propagation Station, located in Xinshe, Taichung, primarily cultivates sorghum for seedlings and feed corn. Recently, an area has been developed to organically trial buckwheat, making it Taiwan's first organic seed field. When the buckwheat flowers bloom, it adds to the scenic flower sea landscape.

The Ministry of Agriculture announced in a press release today that the station's organic field not only shoulders the important task of high-quality organic seed collection but also integrates multiple values such as landscape, ecology, and education. Taking the recently promoted organic buckwheat as an example, it has advantages such as a short growth period and good adaptability. When the flowers are in full bloom, fields of white flowers sway in the wind, not only adding a romantic rural landscape atmosphere but also becoming a recreational space for the public to get close to nature and relax.

According to the station, in addition to visual beauty, the blooming buckwheat fields attract a large number of bees and insects to collect nectar. Coupled with the "raptor perches" and "insect hotels" previously established by the station in the surrounding areas, which are friendly ecological facilities, a complete farmland ecological network has been successfully constructed.

Liu Ming-tsung, deputy director of the station, told CNA that the seed collection field is about 50 hectares, mainly cultivating sorghum for seedlings and feed corn. In line with the Ministry of Agriculture's promotion of grain cultivation and organic agriculture, about 1 hectare of land has been developed into an organic seed field. Buckwheat, which is in increasing demand, is being trialed without the use of pesticides.
