(Central News Agency, reporter Li Yawen, Taipei, 2nd) Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Deputy Minister Liang Wen-chieh said today that "United Front Work" is not a legal term, but can be called a policy-oriented term; whether the activities organized by the mainland are United Front Work activities, everyone knows in their hearts. The reason for the controversy is likely that people want to participate even in United Front Work activities.
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) held its regular press conference this afternoon, hosted by Liang Wen-chieh.
When asked by the media how the government defines the CCP's "United Front Work," Liang Wen-chieh said that KMT Vice Chairman Chang Rong-kung recently participated in activities in mainland China such as the Straits Forum, the Sun Yat-sen Forum, and the "2026 Cross-Strait Youth Summit." These activities involve topics like "how to unify Taiwan" and "the benefits after unification." Those sitting in the audience expressed their agreement, and "I think there's no need to argue further whether these are United Front Work activities."
Liang Wen-chieh stated that when invited to participate in activities organized by the mainland, the CCP will definitely confirm in advance what the participant will say at the event. People who express different views are unlikely to be present at such events. Activities with fixed formats and patterns like these, "in our view, are self-evident United Front Work activities."
He gave an example: When KMT Chairperson Cheng Li-wen met with CCP leader Xi Jinping in Beijing, she basically echoed Xi Jinping's remarks entirely, "This needs no argument."
He emphasized that "United Front Work" is not a legal term, but it does exist in Taiwanese vocabulary and there is no difficulty in communication. It is also a policy-oriented term. The term is a concrete thing on the mainland; the CCP has a United Front Work Department, and there are United Front units under each province and city. The "Law on the Promotion of Ethnic Unity and Progress" came into effect on the 1st, and it also includes the coordination and leadership of the United Front Work Department in its provisions.
Liang Wen-chieh concluded that perhaps the reason for the controversy is not whether the activities organized by the mainland are United Front Work activities; rather, it is that some people "still want to participate" even if they know they are United Front Work activities. The controversy is likely here. Whether those activities are United Front Work activities, everyone actually knows in their hearts. (Editor: Lu Jia-jung) 1150702
