US-Iran War Key News

(CNA Doha, July 2) After the US-Iran indirect talks concluded on July 1, the mediating countries stated today that the next round of US-Iran indirect talks is expected to be held after the funeral of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to Agence France-Presse, although the US and Iran exchanged fire this week, after the indirect talks concluded yesterday, US President Trump, and the mediating countries Qatar and Pakistan, all released messages indicating that diplomatic negotiations are continuing to advance.

Both sides had previously reached a memorandum of understanding agreeing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and cease hostilities. However, multiple significant issues must be addressed in subsequent talks, including Iran's nuclear program.

Pakistan stated today: "Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan (on July 1) held separate meetings with US and Iranian negotiators in Doha and achieved positive progress."

Pakistan also stated that both the US and Iran agreed to continue talks, and "the next round of talks will be held as soon as possible after the funeral of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei."

The US and Israel launched an attack on Iran on February 28, and the 86-year-old Khamenei was killed in his official residence that day. After his death, power was quickly transferred to his son, Mojtaba Khamenei.

Khamenei's public memorial service will be held on July 4, and his body will be interred in a large mosque complex in the center of Tehran, which is an important venue for weekly Friday prayers, official ceremonies, and religious gatherings.

The funeral ceremony will be held on July 9 at the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad, a city in northeastern Iran and Khamenei's hometown.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, who led the Tehran delegation, stated after the talks concluded on July 1 that both the US and Iran agreed to establish communication channels by July 3 for reporting and recording any violations of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding.
