(CNA Taipei, July 2, 2024) Media reports have questioned whether alcohol brought back by Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim upon completion of her overseas assignments was legally declared and taxed, with no definitive explanation provided to date. The Directorate General of Customs, Ministry of Finance, stated that alcohol returned by former Ambassador to the U.S. and Vice President Hsiao upon completing her overseas tenure was declared to customs and taxed in accordance with regulations.
The Directorate General of Customs, Ministry of Finance, stated on the evening of July 1 that according to Article 3, Paragraph 1 of the "Regulations Governing Personnel Dispatched Overseas by the Government Who Are Recalled and Bring Back Personal Belongings Upon Completion of Their Terms" and Article 11 of the "Regulations Governing the Inspection, Taxation, and Release of Baggage Carried by Inbound Travelers," overseas personnel recalled upon completion of their terms who bring back alcohol exceeding 1 liter (currently 1.5 liters) shall be taxed according to law.
The Directorate General of Customs, Ministry of Finance, stated that the alcohol returned by Vice President Hsiao upon completing her overseas tenure was declared to customs and released after taxation in accordance with regulations, and no special privileges were enjoyed.
