(CNA, Hsinchu County, July 3) Hsinchu County's Department of Health stated today that following notification of the flow of contaminated cooking oil from downstream manufacturers, an inspection was launched. A total of 29 businesses were inspected, and it was confirmed that the problematic cooking oil has been removed from shelves to ensure public food safety.

On July 1, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Ministry of Health and Welfare received a report from the Chung Lien Oil Corporation. A batch of soybean salad oil, approximately 1,300 metric tons, supplied to businesses including Fwusow Industry Co., Ltd., Fwumoil Co., Ltd., and President Enterprise Corporation, was found to have self-detected levels of the carcinogen "benzo(a)pyrene" exceeding regulatory limits.

The Hsinchu County Government issued a press release today stating that after receiving information on the flow from downstream manufacturers, the Department of Health dispatched personnel to investigate whether downstream manufacturers within its jurisdiction had indeed removed and recalled the products according to regulations. They also confirmed the inventory status of the problematic cooking oil and inspected cooking oil used at catering establishments and various retail points to ensure there was no risk of it entering the market.

The county government stated that a total of 4 manufacturing businesses, 20 catering businesses, and 5 retail businesses were inspected today, and all have completed the removal of the products. Subsequently, inspections of cooking oil at general food and beverage establishments such as catering venues and retail stores will be strengthened to ensure the safety of the public's diet.

The county government pointed out that if food businesses discover that their products pose a risk to public health and safety, they should immediately stop selling them and initiate a recall, as well as self-report. Failure to report as required will result in a fine of not less than NT$30,000 and not more than NT$3 million, in accordance with the Food Safety and Sanitation Act. (Editor: Yang Sheng-ru) 1150703
