(CNA, reporter Chang Jung-hsiang, Tainan, July 4) The outer bands of Typhoon Mikala, combined with the southwest monsoon, brought extreme heavy rainfall on June 26, causing the Sanye Creek to overflow and flood. Now, with Typhoon Bavi approaching, the Tainan City Government has urgently initiated emergency work to raise the Sanye Creek levee, constructing a resilient defense line.
The Tainan City Water Resources Bureau stated today that Typhoon Bavi is forecast to approach Taiwan gradually next week, potentially bringing abundant moisture and intense rainfall. The emergency levee raising project for Sanye Creek aims to protect the easily flooded bottleneck sections and low-lying areas adjacent to the Taiyi Industrial Park on the left bank of the Sanye Creek.
This project involves a construction length of 750 meters, with all existing revetments along the route being raised by 30 centimeters. This will enhance the overall flood protection standard from the original "10-year return period" to "50-year return period," effectively resisting more extreme rainfall scales and strengthening the disaster resilience of the Sanye Creek area along the Taiyi Industrial Park.
The Water Resources Bureau indicated that the construction team will employ multiple sets of heavy machinery and synchronized human efforts for high-intensity operations. The project is scheduled for phased completion by July 7 at the earliest, establishing a solid defense line against floods.
The outer bands of Typhoon Mikala, combined with the southwest monsoon, brought extreme heavy rainfall. The upper watershed of Sanye Creek received 267 millimeters of rain in 6 hours and 353 millimeters in 24 hours, far exceeding the design standards for existing stormwater drainage and regional drainage systems, leading to the overflow of Sanye Creek and affecting the Taiyi Industrial Park, Rende District, and East District.
