(Central News Agency, reporter Huang Xu-sheng, New Taipei, July 4) A four-vehicle accident occurred on the northbound lanes of National Highway 1 in the Taishan section this morning. A 63-year-old man driving a private car allegedly made an improper lane change, sideswiped a commercial truck, and lost control, subsequently affecting two other private cars. Police stated that a total of two people were injured, and the cause of the accident is under investigation.

The Highway Police Bureau reported that at 7:05 AM, they received a report of a four-vehicle accident on the northbound lanes of National Highway 1 at kilometer 36.5 in the Taishan section. One of the private cars overturned. The duty command center immediately notified the traffic control center and dispatched fire and ambulance services to the scene.

Police investigation revealed that the male driver, surnamed Yang, was changing lanes from the auxiliary lane to the outer lane when he allegedly made an improper lane change, colliding with a commercial truck driven by a 54-year-old man surnamed Chen. Yang's vehicle then lost control, struck the inner guardrail, and affected two other private cars.

The accident caused a private car driven by a 74-year-old man surnamed Chen to overturn. After hitting the outer guardrail, it came to a stop. Chen sustained abrasions and bruises on his limbs, and a 67-year-old female passenger in his car suffered minor injuries. Both were transported by ambulance to Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou for treatment. Police stated that the blood alcohol content of all drivers was zero, and the detailed cause of the accident is still under further investigation.

Police urge drivers to obey traffic rules, drive within the speed limit, maintain a safe distance before changing lanes, confirm the traffic conditions behind them, use turn signals, and then confirm safety again before changing lanes. Drivers and passengers in the front and rear seats should wear seat belts at all times to reduce accident injuries. (Editor: Li Heng-shan) 1150704
