(CNA Washington, July 3rd) A deadly heatwave is sweeping across the eastern United States. A man in Pennsylvania died from heatstroke leading to a heart attack. Affected by the extreme high temperatures, Philadelphia's July 4th parade was canceled, and some 250th anniversary celebrations in Washington D.C. were temporarily suspended. Thousands of households in the New York metropolitan area experienced power outages today.
This multi-day heatwave continues to scorch the eastern United States. CNN reports that several locations broke their all-time high temperature records for July 3rd today, including Washington D.C. The capital city's temperature soared to 102 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 38.9 degrees Celsius) today, breaking the 1872 record of 101 degrees Fahrenheit.
According to reports, yesterday in Bethel Township, Pennsylvania, the temperature exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 37.8 degrees Celsius). A 68-year-old man tragically died after trimming bushes. The Berks County Coroner's Office stated the cause of death was "heatstroke leading to cardiac arrest due to exertion."
Furthermore, as the United States approaches its Independence Day, the extreme heat has disrupted some celebratory activities. Those planning to celebrate July 4th outdoors face higher health risks. The Great American State Fair, part of the U.S. Semiquincentennial celebration held on the National Mall in Washington D.C. for several days, was temporarily suspended this afternoon.
The organizers posted on X: "Due to the extreme heat, and in coordination with public safety officials, the Great American State Fair will be temporarily closed today until 5 PM."
Despite the National Weather Service issuing an excessive heat warning for Washington D.C., crowds could still be seen on the National Mall this afternoon, undeterred by the high temperatures. Many people wore hats or used umbrellas for shade. The National Mall features many of Washington D.C.'s iconic landmarks, stretching from the U.S. Capitol Building to the Lincoln Memorial, with attractions along the way including the Washington Monument.
July 4th activities in Pennsylvania were also affected by the heat. CNN reports that Philadelphia's Independence Day parade, originally scheduled for today, was canceled due to "extreme heat." This parade was expected to be one of the largest July 4th holiday events nationwide this year.
Moreover, the heatwave has put a strain on the power grid. According to reports, energy provider Con Edison stated that thousands of households in the New York metropolitan area were without power today. (Editor: Chen Cheng-kung) 1150704
