(CNA, Taipei, July 6) China today test-fired a submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead into the Pacific Ocean. Presidential Office Spokesperson Kuo Ya-hui stated this evening that Beijing has recently escalated military pressure within the island chain, implemented a "transnational repression" special law that violates international human rights, and is now attempting to intimidate the international community by test-firing an intercontinental missile. The Presidential Office expresses its strong condemnation of this series of unilateral actions.

Kuo Ya-hui told reporters that China has continuously conducted various military exercises in the region, engaged in gray-zone harassment and maritime coercion against neighboring countries, and recently carried out authoritarian expansion under the guise of "law enforcement" in surrounding waters such as the East China Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait. The actions of the Beijing authorities have caused unease in the Indo-Pacific region and the international community, further highlighting China's increasingly evident ambition for expansion in the Western Pacific. She called on China to exercise restraint, return to the correct path of a rules-based international order, and immediately cease its irresponsible unilateral actions.

Kuo Ya-hui pointed out that maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region is an international consensus. The recent joint statement issued by leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) reaffirmed their opposition to any attempt to unilaterally change the status quo in the East China Sea, South China Sea, and Taiwan Strait by force or coercion.

She stated that Taiwan will continue to strengthen its own defense capabilities to bring peace through strength, and will work with like-minded democratic allies to cooperate, collectively defend, and share responsibilities, thereby achieving deterrence and ensuring freedom, democracy, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.
