(CNA Kyiv, July 6, Combined Reports) Ukrainian authorities stated that Russia launched missile and drone attacks on the Kyiv region today, resulting in at least 14 deaths and approximately 60 injuries. This is the second attack by Russian forces within a week and occurs on the eve of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit.

According to Agence France-Presse, a few days prior, another Russian attack on the Kyiv region claimed over 30 lives. Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged NATO allies to make "strong decisions" to enhance Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

The European Union (EU) also stated that Ukraine needs air defense support.

The pre-dawn assault left a gaping hole in an apartment building in Kyiv, with the top floor almost torn in half.

An Agence France-Presse reporter heard more than 10 loud explosions during the missile air raid alert and saw several flashes in the sky, followed by a series of explosions.

This is the second time in a week that Russia has used hard-to-intercept ballistic missiles. Zelenskyy has once again urgently appealed to allies for advanced missiles to be used with U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems.

Zelenskyy will discuss the Russia-Ukraine war with U.S. President Trump on the sidelines of the annual NATO summit tomorrow.

He posted on social media: "It is crucial that the United States and our European partners make strong decisions at the NATO summit in Ankara to support our air defense capabilities and protect civilian lives."

Zelenskyy stated that at least 14 people died in Kyiv and its surrounding areas, with approximately 60 others injured.

He also said that Russia launched a total of 68 missiles and 351 attack drones.

Officials indicated that about 30 residential buildings in Kyiv were damaged. Hours after the attack, rescue workers continued their search amidst the rubble and debris.

Zelenskyy pointed out that the Ukrainian military shot down Russian drones and cruise missiles, but "the supply of air defense interceptor missiles is insufficient" to stop ballistic missiles.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the attack highlights Ukraine's "urgent" need for more air defense systems, which will be discussed at the NATO summit. (Compiled by Liu Shu-chin) 1150706
