Keelung City to Seek Damages from Manufacturer of Problematic Cooking Oil Used at 4 Schools

(CNA, Keelung, July 6) - Keelung City has investigated problematic cooking oil, finding that a catering company had supplied the affected Yikang soybean salad oil to Mingde Junior High School, Mingchuan Junior High School, Jiande Junior High School, and Zhongshan Senior High School. The city government announced today that it has confirmed that teachers and students at these four schools consumed the oil and will seek damages from the manufacturer.

The Keelung City Government Department of Education issued a statement indicating that an investigation revealed that the catering company, Shifu Gourmet Co., Ltd., supplied the same batch of affected Yikang soybean salad oil to Mingde Junior High School, Mingchuan Junior High School, Jiande Junior High School, and Zhongshan Senior High School between April 20 and June 10.

The Department of Education stated that following an inspection by the Taipei City Department of Education on the 3rd, all affected batches of oil have been returned, and it has been confirmed that there is no remaining stock. The Department of Education has also requested all schools and catering companies in Keelung City to preemptively remove all oil products of the relevant brand from shelves. A follow-up inspection of kitchens is expected to be completed by the 7th to reconfirm oil inventory.

The Department of Education pointed out that since it is confirmed that teachers and students at the four schools consumed the problematic cooking oil, the city government will file a claim for damages against the manufacturer in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act and the Civil Code. Furthermore, it will report the manufacturer to the authorities under the Food Safety and Sanitation Act. If the operator is found to have concealed information or provided false information subsequently, they will be fined in accordance with the Keelung City School Lunch Self-Governance Regulations, with the maximum penalty being NT$100,000.
