(Central News Agency, Kano, Nigeria, July 6, 2024, Reuters)At least 9 farmers were killed and several others were kidnapped in an attack by gunmen on a village in Kaduna State, northwestern Nigeria.

According to Agence France-Presse, for several weeks during this year's rainy season, extremists and criminal gangs accustomed to kidnapping and stealing livestock have intensified their attacks on farming communities in northern and central Nigeria, targeting villages that refuse or fail to pay protection fees.

Kaduna State is one of several central and northern states suffering from the rampage, where gangs carry out raids on villages, abduct people for ransom or kill them, and even loot homes before setting them on fire.

According to a security report submitted to the United Nations obtained by Agence France-Presse, gunmen stormed farmland near Kakangi village in Birnin Gwari district on the 4th, opening fire on farmers working in the fields.

The report states that 9 bodies have been recovered so far, and 6 of the deceased have been identified by local authorities. (Intern Editor: Lu Shiting / Reviewer: Chen Yi-wei) 1150706
