(CNA, Reporter Li Zongxuan, Bangkok, July 6) Amb. Lan, Representative to Thailand, stated in a recent interview with Thai media outlet Thai Rath that Thailand's active development in high-tech industries such as AI, semiconductors, and the digital economy aligns highly with Taiwan's industrial development direction. The two sides can deepen cooperation in areas like supply chain layout, talent cultivation, and technological collaboration in the future.
Thai Rath published a report on the interview with Amb. Lan on July 4. Amb. Lan pointed out that the Thai government is committed to building a regional technology industry hub, listing semiconductors, AI and robotics, the digital economy, clean energy, and biotechnology as key development industries. These are also areas where Taiwan has long invested significant effort, thus possessing broad space for cooperation.
He stated that Taiwan-Thailand economic and trade relations have continued to heat up in recent years, with notable growth in cooperation related to the electronics products and semiconductor supply chains. According to statistics, bilateral trade between Taiwan and Thailand in the first quarter of this year increased by 47.8% year-on-year, reaching a new high. During the same period, the Board of Investment (BOI) of Thailand approved NT$14.6 billion in Taiwanese investment, approximately half of the total approved investment for the entire previous year, reflecting businesses' continued optimism about the Thai market.
Amb. Lan stated that the semiconductor and AI industries are not just about chip manufacturing but encompass a complete industrial ecosystem covering upstream, midstream, and downstream.
"For Thailand, it can drive economic growth and exports by developing its industrial chain; for Taiwan, it helps companies establish more diversified production bases, forming a mutually beneficial cooperation model."
In addition to investment cooperation, talent cultivation is also a key focus for Taiwan-Thailand collaboration. Amb. Lan pointed out that the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand is fully engaged in talent cultivation programs through the "Taiwan-Thailand Technology Talent Service Platform," working with businesses and universities to promote skills training.
In the interview, Amb. Lan also addressed China's "Law on Safeguarding National Security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region" implemented on July 1, quoting an official statement from the Taiwanese government to emphasize that the law gives rise to "long-arm jurisdiction" issues.
Furthermore, he also explained the distinction between the "One China Principle" and the "One China Policy," stating that the "One China Principle" is a principle adhered to by the Chinese Communist Party itself, whereas the "One China Policy" refers to each country's understanding and policy regarding "One China" as a sovereign nation.
Through the interview, Amb. Lan called on Thailand to firmly uphold its "One China Policy" stance, asserting that Taiwan-Thailand relations can develop in parallel and need not be bound by a single issue. He also stated that Taiwan and Thailand have established a solid foundation for cooperation, which paves the way for expanding more collaborative opportunities between the two sides.
