Through thermal imaging transmitted by drones, Ukrainian pilots, in the hazy gray-white visuals, closely monitor the roads vital to Russian military supply. They skillfully operate mid-range drones, searching for targets, and this drone fleet is reshaping the battlefield dynamics.
According to an Associated Press report, within a basement command post in Kharkiv, Ukraine, pilots patiently await enemy movements. Once vehicles appear, they gently nudge the controllers, sending drones hundreds of kilometers away to dive towards Russian-occupied territory, destroying Russian rear supplies.
Kat, commander of the K-2 Brigade responsible for operating mid-range drones, stated, "Our mission is to cut off logistics. Once we cut off their supply lines, front-line infantry will have no food, no ammunition, no night vision equipment, no batteries, nothing. This is how we wear them down from all levels."
Several Ukrainian commanders have indicated that by repeatedly striking roads used for transporting fuel, ammunition, and reinforcements, they have successfully made Russian logistics slower, more costly, and more unpredictable. This helps to curb Russian offensives and allows Ukraine to launch counterattacks and strikes in the annexed Crimea, isolating the Crimean Peninsula's connection to mainland Russia.
Until recently, Russian rear supply areas were beyond Ukraine's strike range. Front-line drones lacked sufficient range, and long-range drones were reserved for strategic targets hundreds of kilometers away. This created a corridor of 25 to 200 kilometers between them, where Russian troops and supplies could move with relative freedom.
Now, fixed-wing mid-range drones equipped with Starlink satellite communication have begun to fill this gap, transforming Russia's logistical rear into an active battlefield.
Samuel Bendett, a researcher at the Center for Naval Analyses, commented, "They are ensuring that Russian logistics lines are under continuous pressure, preventing Russia from supplying certain parts of the front line, thereby making the overall situation more manageable."
Bendett stated that while Russia develops countermeasures, Ukraine must maintain this pressure. He anticipates that Moscow will eventually adapt to this tactic, but he also pointed out that Russia's larger military scale allows them to absorb greater losses during this period.
He said, "The question is whether Ukraine can sustain this pressure in the coming weeks and months." (Compiled by Chang Ming-hsuan) 1150706
