The portrait holds significant symbolic meaning for the Mongolian people, and the Taipei Trade and Economic Representative Office in Ulaanbaatar held a special tribute ceremony at the museum today.
The Taipei Trade and Economic Representative Office in Ulaanbaatar held a "Commemoration of the 820th Anniversary of the Founding of the Mongol Empire and Tribute Ceremony for the Half-body Portrait of Genghis Khan" at the National Palace Museum today. The event was attended by Tumurbaatar Gankhuyag, Representative of the Taipei Trade and Economic Representative Office in Ulaanbaatar, along with National Palace Museum Director-General Shiao Tsung-huang, Director-General of the Department of West Asian and African Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yen Chia-liang, Representative of the Taipei Trade and Economic Representative Office in Ulaanbaatar Wang Kai-yu, and representatives from various foreign representative institutions in Taiwan.
Shiao Tsung-huang stated that the "Half-body Portrait of Emperor Taizu of Yuan" in the National Palace Museum's collection is one of the most representative images of Genghis Khan today and serves as an important symbol for Mongolian friends, connecting historical memory and national culture. In recent years, the museum has engaged in exchanges with institutions such as the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the Winter Palace Bogd Khan Museum, and the Genghis Khan Museum, and looks forward to further deepening cooperation in the future.
Tumurbaatar expressed that the exhibition of the "Half-body Portrait of Emperor Taizu of Yuan" at the National Palace Museum is highly significant, coinciding with the 820th anniversary of Genghis Khan's establishment of the Great Mongol State. Genghis Khan is an important historical memory for the Mongolian people and a profoundly influential figure in world history and cultural exchange. The public is welcome to view the exhibition and learn about traditional Mongolian sports such as wrestling, horse racing, and archery.
The "Half-body Portrait of Emperor Taizu of Yuan" will be featured in the special exhibition "Skill and Sport: Arts and Physical Activities in Painting and Calligraphy." Pu Lih-an, a curator and assistant researcher at the Department of Paintings and Calligraphy of the National Palace Museum, explained in a press release that the portrait depicts Emperor Taizu of Yuan wearing a white robe and a fur hat, with traditional Mongolian braids visible behind his ears. The facial features are rendered with delicate lines and layered colors to present the texture of the skin, while the hair, beard, and the fur trim of the hat are meticulously depicted, showcasing the realistic style of Yuan dynasty imperial portraits.
Another national treasure on display, "Emperor Shizu of Yuan Hunting" by Liu Guandao of Yuan, depicts Emperor Shizu Kublai Khan and his entourage on an excursion in the desert. In the painting, Emperor Shizu is dressed in a crimson robe with golden dragon patterns, a white fur coat, and red boots. Details such as camel caravans, attendants drawing bows and arrows, falconers with trained birds, and hunting leopards accompany the scene, vividly portraying the imperial hunting and archery activities of the Yuan dynasty.
The special exhibition "Skill and Sport: Arts and Physical Activities in Painting and Calligraphy" will be on display at the National Palace Museum's Northern Branch from July 10 to September 16. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150706
