National Education Bureau Directors Meeting: Frontline Workers Call for Teachers' Emotions to Be Addressed First

(Central News Agency reporter Chen Zhizhong Hsinchu, July 7th)The 115th National Education Bureau Directors Meeting was held in Hsinchu County today, focusing on the issue of SEL (Social Emotional Learning). Several frontline education professionals shared that "teachers need to be supported first before they can stably accompany children," highlighting the emotional labor of teachers.

Minister of Education Zheng Yingyao and education bureau directors from various counties and cities gathered in Hsinchu County for the meeting. SEL was selected as one of the major topics, and several frontline teachers were invited to share their experiences.

Zhang Huijuan, principal of the Affiliated Elementary School of National Dong Hwa University, shared that the school uses reading as the main axis of SEL. Because stories always have characters and conflicts, one can understand from them that "when you have emotions, others also have their own inner dramas," and thus empathize with others and practice expression.

Zhang Huijuan pointed out that SEL is not only important for students but also for teachers, because "teachers need to be supported first before they can stably accompany children." "If teachers run out of power, it's hard for them to be a mobile power source for children." The school provides resources, time, and restorative spaces through professional workshops, aromatherapy, and stress management courses, allowing teachers to continue growing in a supportive environment.

Guo Fangjiang, principal of Zhunan Junior High School in Miaoli County, also mentioned that the core of SEL lies in "leading by example." Teachers must effectively regulate their own stress to create a safe and stable learning atmosphere. The school also encourages parental involvement through lectures to impart skills for cultivating children's emotional observation and interpersonal interaction, extending the influence of SEL from schools to families.

Luodong Senior High School in Yilan County organized the "Worries, Etc. General Store," encouraging teachers to relieve stress and heal their minds and bodies through reading and sharing. Teacher Hu Minhua pointed out that the community has a high degree of freedom, and it's okay to rest or take a break when tired. After teachers learn SEL knowledge, they can further "permeate" it into their curriculum and class management.
