(Central News Agency, reporter Hsiao Po-yang, Nantou County, July 7) Cattail was an important natural material for Sun Moon Lake residents in the past, used for weaving fish baskets and daily utensils. The Chang Lien-kuei Traditional Arts Foundation has launched innovative tourism programs featuring cattail, collaborating with the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute to promote innovation in cattail crafts, moving towards building a characteristic cultural industry for Sun Moon Lake's cattail.
The Chang Lien-kuei Traditional Arts Foundation stated in a press release today that it is promoting the innovative development of traditional crafts, with cattail's century-old craftsmanship as its core, launching in-depth experience itineraries that connect cuisine, crafts, and culture. The foundation has also joined hands with the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute to visit the natural growing areas of cattail in Nantou County's Sun Moon Lake, to understand the plant's ecology and harvesting methods, and to exchange ideas on craft design and brand strategy.
Lin Chung-shen, chairman of the Chang Lien-kuei Traditional Arts Foundation, said that cattail is a fern originating from the glacial period. In the past, Sun Moon Lake residents used cattail to weave fish baskets, fish traps, and various daily utensils, making it an important local natural material. With the changes of the times, this traditional craft has declined. The foundation has repackaged it into a journey, hoping the public will recognize this local cultural asset and drive community development.
Lin Chung-shen stated that themed "Searching for Sun Moon Lake's Century-Old Cultural Traces," a series of experiential itineraries have been planned, including traditional culture, lakeside cycling, crafts, lake tour exploration, and innovative cattail cuisine. The foundation continues to invest in the preservation and promotion of cattail crafts. In addition to preserving precious cultural relics through the Mingtan Legend Museum, it will also cooperate with the Craft Institute in the future, hoping to gradually build a Sun Moon Lake cattail craft cluster.
The Craft Institute, through the foundation, stated that the Chang Lien-kuei Foundation has been deeply involved in Sun Moon Lake, developing diverse experiential content with cattail, successfully integrating traditional crafts into local culture and tourism, and demonstrating innovative vitality. In the future, it can move towards establishing a complete production, manufacturing, and sales supply chain, covering cattail conservation, craft creation, brand marketing, and tourism development, to build a complete system for the sustainable development of crafts.
