(CNA) Taipei, July 7 - The Taiwan Stock Exchange is considering extending trading hours for the Taiwan stock market. Wu Dong-liang, chairman of the Chinese National Federation of Industries, stated today that the trading volume of the Taiwan stock market has continued to grow in recent years, and its market capitalization ranks among the top globally. Extending trading hours to align with international exchanges and connect with the world is not a bad thing. However, given Taiwan's K-shaped economic development, extending trading hours may impact traditional industries, and the government should consider corresponding measures.
The Taiwan Stock Exchange is currently considering extending trading hours, with preliminary plans including an extension of 1 to 1.5 hours, potentially pushing the closing time to 3:30 PM. Speaking to reporters before the "Gongliang Lecture" hosted by the Chinese National Federation of Industries today, Chairman Wu Dong-liang said that the trading volume of the Taiwan stock market has been increasing in recent years, and extending trading hours would help the Taiwan market connect with the global market.
However, Wu Dong-liang pointed out that Taiwan's economy is still experiencing a K-shaped development. Stock market performance is mainly concentrated in industries such as semiconductors, information and communication technology (ICT), and artificial intelligence (AI). While many traditional industries also have high-quality companies, extending trading hours might have a certain impact on them, and the government should consider relevant supporting measures.
Wu Dong-liang suggested starting by increasing market funding sources, such as adjusting the risk-based capital (RBC) regulations for insurance companies to allow more insurance funds to be invested in the market.
Regarding the Executive Yuan's recent approval of salary increases for civil servants, military personnel, and teachers, Wu Dong-liang stated that salary increases are reasonable and positive. Civil servants, military personnel, and teachers work hard, and their salary increases are commendable. He also pointed out that the financial industry has had an annual salary adjustment system for many years, and if companies are profitable, they should provide employees with more salary and rewards.
