(Central News Agency, Chiayi County, July 7) Chang Chien-cheng, head of the Fisheries Section of the Chiayi County Government's Agriculture Department, said today that in response to Typhoon Bavi, fishermen should complete their typhoon preparations by the 10th. This includes inspecting fish farm dikes, drainage facilities, water pumps, and generators. Oyster farmers should strengthen their raft structures and secure them or tow them closer to shore for shelter.
Chang Chien-cheng also urged fishermen to harvest early if necessary to reduce disaster losses.
According to data from the Agriculture Department, last year's Typhoon Dannes severely impacted Chiayi County, with a large number of oyster rafts stranded along the coasts of Dongshi Township and Budai Township, resulting in losses of over NT$180 million for oyster farmers. The Agriculture Department stated that Typhoon Bavi has a considerable storm radius, and there may be strong winds and huge waves in the southwest sea, causing damage to the aquaculture industry.
Chang Chien-cheng reminded fishermen that the next few days before the typhoon are very hot, and they should be careful of heatstroke while preparing for the typhoon. "Drink plenty of plain water, stay cool, and remain vigilant." (Editor: Li Ming-tsung) 1150707
