2026 World Cup Key News

(Central News Agency, Cairo, July 7) - Egypt's team has historically advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time, not only rewriting the history of Egypt's participation in the World Cup but also bringing the nation its highest-ever prize money from a football tournament. Sports industry experts point out that what is truly worth anticipating are the long-term economic benefits that follow.

According to the Egyptian media 'Egypt Independent,' after advancing to the Round of 16, Egypt has secured at least $15 million USD (approximately NT$480 million) in prize money from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), setting a record for the highest international competition prize money in Egyptian football history.

The report indicates that this income includes $11 million USD for reaching the Round of 32 and an additional $4 million USD for advancing to the Round of 16 after defeating Australia. If Egypt further advances to the quarterfinals, the cumulative prize money will increase to $19 million USD. Furthermore, even before the tournament's opening, FIFA provided Egypt with a $1.5 million USD subsidy specifically for training camps and competition preparations.

This substantial income is considered an important national resource for the Egyptian football team, which has faced financial challenges in recent years, and is expected to be invested in youth football training, national team development, and league advancement.

In addition, Amr ElRawi, CEO of the British sports business consulting firm Game Changers and an Egyptian national, pointed out that the true value the World Cup brings to Egypt extends far beyond the tens of millions in prize money disbursed by FIFA. The longer-term economic benefits include subsequent brand sponsorships, broadcasting rights, tourism, and investment.

ElRawi stated in a recent interview with Egyptian media QNews TV that the excellent performance in the World Cup will significantly enhance the brand value of Egyptian football, attracting more corporate investment in sponsorships, and also contributing to increased revenue from broadcasting rights, commercial collaborations, and sales of jerseys and merchandise.

ElRawi further explained that the better the national team performs, the more resources companies are willing to invest, creating a positive cycle. Ultimately, not only the national team will benefit, but also Egypt's domestic leagues and clubs at all levels, such as Al Ahly FC or Zamalek Football Club.

ElRawi analyzed that football has now become an important tool for Egypt to cultivate national soft power. On the World Cup stage, Egypt not only enhances its national image but also helps attract more international tourists and investors to recognize Egypt, driving tourism, cultural exchange, and commercial investment.

Egypt has a glorious historical record in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with 26 appearances in the finals and 7 championship trophies, setting the record for the most appearances in the tournament's history.

However, since becoming the first African team to participate in the World Cup in 1934, Egypt has only qualified for the final tournament in 1934, 1990, and 2018, but has never managed to advance to the first round of the knockout stage.

With the World Cup expanding to 48 teams this year, Egypt secured its first-ever World Cup victory in the group stage and then advanced all the way to the Round of 16. They will face football powerhouse Argentina on the 8th, Taiwan time, to compete for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Therefore, ElRawi emphasized that if the current World Cup fervor can be effectively utilized to continue investing in the youth training system, improve the fan viewing experience, develop digital platforms, and establish a more mature football business model, the benefits created by the World Cup will not disappear with the end of the competition but can be transformed into Egypt's long-term football competitiveness.

Emad Ghonem, Technical Director of the Egyptian youth national football team, also told CNA reporters that Egypt's performance in the World Cup not only sets a new record for the national team but also, for Egyptian society facing high inflation, currency depreciation, and economic pressures in recent years, football has become an important force in uniting the emotions of all Egyptians.

For Egypt, this World Cup journey, in addition to writing a new chapter for Egyptian football, may also become an important opportunity to promote the upgrading of Egypt's football industry and create new economic momentum. (Editor: Chang Chih-hsuan) 1150707
