Hayashi Praises Japanese Independent League Development as Yamasaki's "Breaking Balls and Late Movement" Show Promise

(CNA, Taipei, July 7) The Fubon Guardians announced today the signing of Japanese developmental player Masayoshi Yamazaki. Executive Vice President Hayashi praised his "breaking balls and late movement" and noted the team had been watching him for some time, also affirming the high regard for player development in Japan's independent leagues.

The Guardians announced today the signing of 23-year-old Japanese pitcher Masayoshi Yamazaki, formerly of the Tokushima Indigo Socks in Japan's Shikoku Island League Plus, an independent league. He will join as a developmental foreign player, with the hope of bolstering the farm system's strength.

Speaking to the media today, Hayashi mentioned that the team had been observing Yamazaki for some time, noting his good "late movement" and "breaking balls." Yamazaki has already arrived in Taiwan and participated in live batting practice today. His condition will be monitored later.

Hayashi pointed out that there have been previous cases of developmental foreign pitchers, such as Shunsuke Suzuki and Yudai Abe, who adjusted in the minor league (second team) before being promoted to the major league (first team) and performing well. He assessed that this model is beneficial for team strength.

When asked why the team consistently seeks Japanese developmental foreign players, Hayashi chuckled and said, "Perhaps I am more familiar with them." He also mentioned that in the NPB draft, a certain number of independent league players are selected each year, and independent league teams like the Tokushima Indigo Socks are highly regarded for their player development.

As teams compete for the second half of the season, the Rakuten Monkeys recently opted to add two foreign sluggers. Hayashi stated that the Guardians currently need pitching strength more, and it depends on each team's choices.
