TAICHUNG, Taiwan (CNA) - With Typhoon Bavi approaching, the Taichung City Government convened its first preparatory meeting for Typhoon Bavi today. Mayor Lu Shiow-yen urged residents to use the next two days to prepare for the typhoon. The Civil Affairs Bureau stated that access to the section of road leading to Xueshankeng Trail and the popular attraction "Giant's Hand" will be controlled.
Typhoon Bavi is gradually approaching Taiwan. The Central Weather Administration predicts an increased probability of issuing sea and land typhoon warnings, with rainfall in mountainous areas likely to intensify. The city government urgently convened its first preparatory meeting for Typhoon Bavi this evening, chaired by Lu Shiow-yen, inviting various city government departments, the military, the Taichung Weather Station, and other relevant units to report on typhoon preparedness.
Lu Shiow-yen stated that according to the latest information from the Central Weather Administration, Bavi has reached the level of a strong typhoon. Although its current path and whether it will make landfall in Taiwan remain uncertain, its storm radius and outer circulation will inevitably affect Taiwan. The city government prefers to prepare strictly in advance rather than react after the warning is issued. Cross-departmental typhoon preparedness work has been fully activated, requiring all departments to remain vigilant and make every effort to protect the lives and property of citizens.
Lu Shiow-yen reminded residents to complete their home typhoon preparations as soon as possible while the weather is relatively stable over the next two days, and to avoid dangerous areas such as mountainous regions and coastal areas from July 9th and 10th onwards. Even if rainfall and wind may not be significant in some areas, the soil in mountainous regions may loosen due to continuous rainfall, making landslides, rockfalls, and debris flows more likely.
Civil Affairs Bureau Director Wu Shih-wei explained at the meeting that due to continuous heavy rainfall since June 25th, the Xueshankeng industrial road in Daguan Village, Heping District, has experienced multiple large-scale slope collapses at the 1.5-kilometer mark. If further strong winds and heavy rain occur, it could trigger composite disasters such as rockfalls, collapses, or debris flows.
To ensure public safety, Wu Shih-wei stated that the Heping District Office has been instructed to set up warning facilities such as signs and Jersey barriers at the road entrance this morning, completely controlling the section of road leading to Xueshankeng Trail and the popular attraction "Giant's Hand" to prevent people from entering high-risk areas. Today, some people were still found to have ignored the warnings and rode their motorcycles into the mountainous area. The public is urged not to take chances or venture into the mountains, to avoid accidents and tragic events. (Editor: Li Hsi-chang) 1150707
