Taipei, July 7 (CNA) Sunplus Technology, a supplier of components for low-Earth orbit satellites, is optimistic about three major applications for terahertz frequencies: satellites, 6G, and AI servers, according to General Manager Wu Dong-yi today. Following the application of millimeter waves in low-Earth orbit satellites, the company is now advancing to sub-terahertz and terahertz frequencies, which are being applied to low-Earth orbit satellites, 6G communications, and AI server transmission, respectively.

Wu Dong-yi stated in an interview at the Taiwan Venture Capital and Private Equity Investment Annual Meeting that sub-terahertz frequencies have been adopted by a major manufacturer's latest generation of low-Earth orbit satellites, and future development looks promising. 6G communications can also utilize sub-terahertz frequencies, and the products have already been developed. However, as 6G uses global common standards, coordination is required, which may slightly delay the application of sub-terahertz frequencies.

Additionally, terahertz frequencies are being applied to the transmission in the hottest area, AI servers. By manufacturing terahertz chips and integrating them into a complete solution, related products have been sent to customers for certification and have the potential to be used in next-generation products.

Wu Dong-yi explained that both sub-terahertz and terahertz frequencies are higher than millimeter wave frequencies. As the frequency increases, the bandwidth also expands, significantly enhancing convenience whether applied to low-Earth orbit satellites or next-generation mobile communications. Although only one major international manufacturer's new generation of low-Earth orbit satellites currently uses sub-terahertz frequencies, the subsequent demand should not be underestimated.

Wu Dong-yi analyzed that to meet higher transmission efficiency, there is a trend of "optical in, copper out" for AI server transmission, with Co-Packaged Optics (CPO) becoming a popular product. The transmission distance within a server rack is related to power consumption. As long as it is within 60 centimeters, using terahertz instead of optical transmission would cost only 1/3 of the price of CPO.

He further explained that the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency range is between 30GHz and 300GHz. Sub-terahertz (Sub-THz) communication typically refers to the frequency band between 100 and 300GHz, while terahertz (Terahertz, THz) frequencies range from 0.1 to 10THz. Generally, some people consider sub-terahertz to be within the broader definition of terahertz frequencies. (Editor: Chang Chun-mao) 1150707
