Central News Agency (CNA) reporter Wang Chaoyu, Yilan, July 7th - The Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival opened on July 4th. On July 5th, a child was injured by over 100 splinters while playing, raising questions about the county government's management. The County Government's Cultural Affairs Bureau stated today that they have asked the contractor to polish and repair the wooden floor to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

A netizen posted on the social platform Threads, stating that a place frequently visited by families with children during the summer holidays harbors danger. Their niece visited the Yilan International Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival on July 5th, and almost all children, whether wearing slippers or not, were pricked. The niece was injured by over 100 splinters, which is outrageous.

The netizen pointed out that they had already removed the larger splinters and that smaller ones required sedation for removal. Even a small splinter would cause adults to cry out in pain, let alone children. They had reported the issue to the Cultural Affairs Bureau but had not yet received a response. The county government should ensure proper safety management; why was the oversight not done?

In response, the Yilan County Government's Cultural Affairs Bureau stated that regarding the incident of a child's foot being injured by wooden splinters while playing barefoot in the festival park, an on-site inspection revealed that the area in question is an existing raised wooden floor in the park. Due to long-term use, some wooden planks may have developed fine splinters, posing a risk of injury when visitors walk or rub their feet on them barefoot.

The Cultural Affairs Bureau stated that they have asked the contractor to polish and repair the wooden floor to prevent similar incidents from occurring again. They also advise visitors to wear shoes with adequate coverage when leaving the water play areas to enjoy the park's facilities with peace of mind. Acting County Magistrate Lin Mao-sheng has also instructed the county government team to strengthen inspections of the entire park and ensure safety. (Editor: Chang Ming-kun) 1150707
