(Central News Agency, reporter Zhang Qian, Hong Kong, July 7) - The Hong Kong government had previously applied to the court to confiscate assets related to Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital, who was involved in violating the National Security Law. The hearing was originally scheduled for tomorrow. According to reports, the hearing has been canceled and will be rescheduled.
Jimmy Lai was convicted of "conspiracy to collude with foreign forces" and "conspiracy to publish seditious publications." The court sentenced him to 20 years in prison in February. The Hong Kong government subsequently applied to the High Court under the National Security Law to confiscate assets related to the crimes committed by Jimmy Lai.
According to reports, the case was originally scheduled to be heard on the 8th, but the Judiciary's website shows that there is no hearing scheduled for this case. A spokesperson for the Department of Justice stated that tomorrow's hearing has been canceled and a new hearing date will be set.
In early April, the Hong Kong government applied to the court to confiscate assets related to Jimmy Lai's violation of the National Security Law. The writ of summons shows that the assets the Hong Kong government seeks to confiscate include shares in 17 companies under Jimmy Lai's name and deposits in several bank accounts, with a known total amount exceeding HK$127 million (approximately NT$510 million).
