Kaohsiung, July 7 (CNA) The Kaohsiung City Health Bureau issued a warning today, stating that as of July 5 this year, there have been a cumulative total of 9 reported cases of severe COVID-19 complications in Kaohsiung. The majority of these cases were individuals aged 65 and above with pre-existing chronic conditions. Among them, 7 cases (including 2 deaths) had not received this season's COVID-19 vaccine.

The Kaohsiung City Health Bureau stated in a press release that in the 26th week of this year (June 28 to July 4), there were 237 outpatient and emergency visits for COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), a significant increase of 45.6% compared to the previous week. Cases of severe complications have also risen. The bureau reminds high-risk groups to complete their vaccinations as soon as possible to reduce the risk of severe illness and complications.

The Health Bureau indicated that the latest statistics show over 230,000 cumulative COVID-19 vaccine doses administered citywide. However, the vaccination rate for the elderly aged 65 and above is only 24.9%, indicating that most seniors are in a period of declining protection. Facing the escalating COVID-19 pandemic and the increasing threat of mortality from severe complications, the bureau urges the public to get vaccinated at contracted medical institutions as soon as possible and to wear masks.

The Health Bureau reminds the public that getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is the most effective way to prevent moderate to severe illness. Anyone who has not been vaccinated since October 1 last year is eligible for vaccination. Individuals aged 12 and above can choose between Moderna or Novavax, while those aged 6 months to 11 years can receive Moderna.

Additionally, three high-risk groups – the elderly aged 65 and above, indigenous people aged 55 to 64, and immunocompromised individuals – can receive a second booster dose if it has been 6 months since their last vaccination, to strengthen their protective barrier.

The Health Bureau urges individuals experiencing suspected COVID-19 symptoms such as fever, dry cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, sneezing, fatigue or general weakness, muscle and joint aches, or headache to seek medical attention promptly. High-risk individuals for severe illness will be assessed by a doctor for rapid antigen testing to facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, and prescription of antiviral medications to reduce the risk of complications and death after infection.
