Chiang Wan-an was invited to attend the "GO-70 Revival Navigation—Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the War of Resistance and the Start of the Central Cross-Island Highway Construction" ceremony today. The event hosted 300 tables with 3,000 attendees. Before Chiang Wan-an entered, a young boy ran towards him outside the main entrance. Chiang Wan-an immediately picked him up for a photo. After entering, Chiang Wan-an took the stage to deliver a speech, and the audience cheered enthusiastically, creating a lively atmosphere.
Chiang Wan-an said that looking back at the 8-year War of Resistance, the officers and soldiers of the national army faced arduous conditions but still demonstrated a spirit of selflessness and sacrifice, ultimately ushering in peace and victory. This history is worth remembering by the nation. He hopes that the public can inherit the sense of mission of their predecessors for the country and the people, and continue to strive for Taiwan's freedom, democracy, and the prosperous development of future generations.
He mentioned that 70 years ago, under the leadership of the then Chairman of the Vocational Assistance Commission for Retired Servicemen, former President Chiang Ching-kuo, over 6,000 retired servicemen, in extremely difficult terrain and environments, used their hands and simple tools to survey and excavate deep into cliffs and steep slopes, building the Central Cross-Island Highway as Taiwan's first east-west cross-island highway. This not only opened up a vital transportation artery but also provided crucial assistance for Taiwan's subsequent economic development.
Chiang Wan-an also mentioned that major infrastructure projects such as the Zengwen Reservoir, Northern Cross-Island Highway, Southern Cross-Island Highway, and Taipei's Zhongzheng Bridge all have the diligent efforts of veteran predecessors behind them. He called on the public to appreciate the contributions of veterans and expressed his hope that this resilient spirit can continue to be passed down, leading Taiwan forward.
