(Central News Agency, reporter Cheng Wei-chen, Changhua, July 8) Regarding the cancer-causing substance exceeding the standard in Chung Lien Oil's soybean salad oil, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen stated today that the central government's decisions regarding the recall of toxic oil have been inconsistent. She hopes that in the future, the central government will demonstrate determination in safeguarding public food safety and avoid causing public confusion.
The Changhua County Government hosted the 2026 Central Taiwan Enterprise Symposium today, attended by Changhua County Magistrate Wang Hui-mei, Miaoli County Magistrate Chung Tung-chin, Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen, Nantou County Magistrate Hsu Shu-hua, Yunlin County Magistrate Chang Li-shan, and Legislative Yuan Vice President Chiang Chi-chen.
In a pre-event media interview regarding the problematic oil case, Lu Shiow-yen said that food is paramount for the people, and public health is the most important. Therefore, in safeguarding public food safety, she hopes the central government can be more proactive, decisive, and on the right track.
Lu Shiow-yen pointed out that concerning the recall of the toxic oil in this case, the central government's decisions were inconsistent. Initially, products using less than 20% of the problematic oil did not need to be recalled, which caused significant public backlash. Later, the policy was changed to require recall even for products with less than 20% of the oil, forcing businesses to conduct two recall operations. If the decision had been made correctly the first time, this would not have been an issue.
Lu Shiow-yen stated that in the future, she hopes the central government will demonstrate more determination and responsibility in safeguarding public food safety, make correct decisions, avoid causing trouble for businesses, and prevent public confusion. Most importantly, the public is concerned about "who will protect the nation" and whether their food safety can be protected. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150708
