(Central News Agency, reporter Chen Chih-chung, Hsinchu, July 8) In response to the approaching Typhoon Bavi, the Subject Test has been postponed to July 13th and 14th. Lin Po-chiao, Director-General of the Ministry of Education, stated today that students in mountainous and remote areas that experience class suspensions will be eligible for subsidies to cover additional transportation and accommodation expenses if they need to travel to the vicinity of the examination venue in advance.
The University Entrance Committee for Science and Technology and the College Entrance Examination Center announced today that due to the strong winds and rain expected from Typhoon Bavi on July 10th and 11th, the Subject Test, originally scheduled for July 11th and 12th, has been postponed to July 13th and 14th.
Lin Po-chiao, Director-General of the Ministry of Education, speaking to the media during the 2026 National Education Bureau Directors Meeting held in Hsinchu County today, said that the University Entrance Committee's decision was made to ensure the smooth operation of examination affairs. Subsequent examination processes, including the announcement of results, college application and placement, and the release of admission lists, will also be adjusted accordingly. The Ministry of Education expresses its deepest gratitude to all personnel involved in the examination preparation and administration.
Lin Po-chiao stated that the Ministry of Education will communicate with all county and city governments during the Directors Meeting, hoping to expedite the restoration of school campuses after the typhoon and ensure smooth transportation around the examination venues so that students can reach them without issue.
For students, if their place of residence is affected by the typhoon on the examination days (July 13th and 14th) or if recovery efforts are insufficient, and the county or city government announces a suspension of work and classes, students who need to travel to the examination location earlier or require accommodation near the examination school the day before the test can apply for subsidies from the College Entrance Examination Center after the exam by submitting relevant proof and receipts for the incurred transportation and accommodation expenses. The subsidy conditions and methods will be announced separately.
When asked by the media if there would be a call for students to leave mountainous areas in advance, Lin Po-chiao replied that the situation varies by region, and the Ministry of Education will not issue a blanket appeal. Instead, it will ask county and city governments to closely monitor the recovery status of campuses and transportation and provide students with timely information.
Regarding examination staff and proctors, Lin Po-chiao said that a substitute mechanism is in place. If there are needs for allowances or compensation, opinions from various county and city governments will be collected and considered for future planning.
The Taiwan Education Industry Union issued a press release today, commending the decision to postpone the Subject Test, prioritizing "life safety" as the most important consideration, calling it a mature, flexible, and resilient decision. However, they also reminded that a comprehensive assessment of proctoring personnel is needed, and that compensatory leave, official leave, and related allowances should be provided generously.
The Taiwan Education Industry Union also urged that typhoons may cause fallen trees, power outages, water leaks, and transportation disruptions. They hope that a thorough safety inspection of air conditioning, power, lighting, and public address systems will be conducted before the exam to provide students with a safe, comfortable, and fair examination environment.
Furthermore, the Taiwan Education Industry Union pointed out that postponements can easily cause anxiety among students. If students are unable to take the exam due to disaster impact, they hope that comprehensive counseling and support measures will be in place to protect the higher education rights of every student.
